Pictures > Burkholder - Pleasant Grove Tornado Damage
This home was located in the direct path of the EF4 torando that struck Pleasant Grove.
Note the condition of the cinder blocks at the bottom of the photo. This is the area under the front steps which is a popular place to shelter in a basement. After seeing multiple homes in this condition I now realize that this is not a safe option. Once the upper portion of the house is removed the occupants are exposed to anything from above, including the cinder blocks collapsing.
The owner of this house was sitting on her basement steps (left side of picture) just seconds before the tornado ripped through her home. Fortunately she climbed in her car before the main level floor collapsed. This was the only place in the basement that she could have been to remain unharmed.
